Flow Cytometry

The Research Technology Support Facility offers two flow cytometers to the MSU community.
Both flow cytometers are multiple laser based optical instruments that analyze cell populations for multiple characteristics simultaneously.
Which cytometer should you use?
Analysis
- Cell cycle analysis and ploidy
- Apotosis
- Mitochondrial activity
- Ca++ release
- Changes in the plasma membrane
- Expression of 1-8 cell surface proteins, receptors, or adhesion molecules
- Expression of cytoplasmic enzymes, hormone receptors, and transport proteins
- Detection of nuclear proteins, oncogenes, and growth factors
Combinatorial Analysis
FACS can rapidly assess individual cells for multiple biochemical parameters. It can combine DNA analysis with quantitation of cell surface markers to observe changes in expression of receptors, CD markers, enzymes, changes in cell cycle status, etc.
Cell Sorting
FACS can select and purify cells in a particular phase of the cell cycle, cells expressing high levels of a receptor, cells devoid of a particular phosphatase or oncogene, etc. FACS can also identify and sort for specific mutants or select for positive transfected cells.
Hours
Available daily by prior appointment. Contact Louis King to obtain an appointment.
